Head of the Anesthesia Techniques Department at Al-Mustaqbal University Chairs a Master’s Thesis Defense Committee at the University of Basrah

Professor Dr. Ahmed Khudhair Abis Al-Himyari, Head of the Anesthesia Techniques Department at the College of Health and Medical Technologies at Al-Mustaqbal University, chaired the public defense committee for the Master’s thesis of postgraduate student Zainab Salah Sami at the College of Science, University of Basrah, on Sunday, August 9, 2026, in the Postgraduate Studies Hall, in the presence of a number of faculty members and researchers. The thesis was entitled: “A Study of the Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on the Acanthamoeba spp. Parasite In Vitro and In Vivo.” The discussion committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Ahmed Khudhair Abis Al-Himyari, with Professor Dr. Athraa Abdul-Amir Aziz from the College of Science, University of Basrah, and Lecturer Dr. Sundus Jumaa Fakher from the College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Basrah, serving as committee members. The thesis was supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Shaimaa Abdul-Razzaq Hamid and Assistant Professor Dr. Intisar Jameel Hamad from the College of Science, University of Basrah. The study focused on the synthesis of nanoparticles using plant extracts in accordance with green synthesis methodologies and examined their effects on the Acanthamoeba spp. parasite both in vitro and in vivo. The research employed different concentrations of silver nanoparticles and varying exposure periods, in addition to investigating their therapeutic effects on the eye and skin tissues of infected mice. The study aimed to explore the potential use of green-synthesized nanoparticles in combating Acanthamoeba spp., a parasite associated with several pathological conditions, including Acanthamoeba keratitis and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis. The research contributes to exploring promising therapeutic approaches to reducing the effects of this parasite. The findings demonstrated the effectiveness of silver nanoparticles in eliminating both the trophozoite and cyst stages of Acanthamoeba spp., highlighting their potential as a promising approach for future research aimed at combating the parasite and developing related therapeutic applications. The participation of Professor Dr. Ahmed Khudhair Abis Al-Himyari in chairing the thesis defense committee reflects the scientific and academic presence of Al-Mustaqbal University and the contribution of its academic staff to supporting scientific research and fostering academic communication among Iraqi universities. It also highlights the University’s role in strengthening scientific cooperation in the fields of health and medical technologies and applied sciences.
