Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is considered one of the promising solutions for reducing the environmental impact of the aviation sector, amid global efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions and achieve environmental sustainability. This type of fuel can be produced from renewable sources, such as used cooking oils, animal fats, agricultural residues, and certain types of organic waste, making it an important alternative to conventional aviation fuel. The production of sustainable aviation fuel involves several stages, including processing raw materials and converting them into hydrocarbon compounds with the properties required to operate aircraft engines. Different technologies are used to achieve this, including hydrotreatment and the conversion of biomass into liquid fuel. After production, the fuel undergoes rigorous testing to ensure that it meets quality, safety, and performance requirements, as well as the applicable standards for use in aircraft. One of the main benefits of sustainable aviation fuel is its potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions over its life cycle compared with conventional fuel. The extent of this reduction depends on the source of the raw materials, the production method, and the energy consumed during manufacturing and transportation. However, burning sustainable aviation fuel in aircraft engines still produces carbon emissions. Therefore, its environmental impact must be evaluated by considering total emissions throughout its production and use, rather than combustion alone. Despite its environmental benefits, sustainable aviation fuel faces several challenges, including high production costs, the limited availability of certain feedstocks, and difficulties in supplying sufficient quantities to meet growing global demand. Expanding its use also requires the development of production facilities and supply chains, alongside investment in technologies that improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce energy consumption. Many types of this fuel can be blended with conventional aviation fuel after meeting the required technical specifications and obtaining the necessary approvals. Expanding the production and use of sustainable aviation fuel represents an important step toward reducing the carbon footprint of the aviation sector and strengthening its environmental responsibility. With continued research and development, increased investment, and improvements in production efficiency, this fuel can contribute to a more sustainable future for air transport while maintaining aircraft safety and operational efficiency.
