Author: Assistant Professor Dr. Sabah Mohammed Abdul-Musahib College of Engineering – Al-Mustaqbal University Abstract This article examines the concept of functionality in contemporary architecture through an analysis of the architectural approach of Zaha Hadid, the internationally renowned Iraqi-born architect. Her architectural works are distinguished by bold forms, fluid lines, and unconventional geometric compositions that challenge traditional architectural principles. The study aims to clarify the relationship between architectural form and function, highlighting the role of surprise as a design element and the use of movement, curvature, interpenetration, and layering to create distinctive architectural spaces. It explores selected projects that demonstrate Hadid’s design philosophy and her approach to massing, spatial relationships, construction techniques, and modern materials. The article emphasizes that architectural success cannot be measured by aesthetic appearance alone. Rather, it requires a balanced integration of formal creativity, functional requirements, spatial organization, structural considerations, and environmental needs. The study concludes that Zaha Hadid’s architectural works represent a significant contribution to contemporary architecture. Her innovative approach has expanded the possibilities of architectural expression and demonstrated how creative forms can be integrated with functional performance.
