As part of its commitment to supporting scientific research and developing modern engineering solutions, Assistant Professor Dr. Mayada Waheed Falah, Head of the Civil Engineering Department at Al-Mustaqbal University, prepared a scientific study addressing the enhancement of shear strength in I-shaped reinforced concrete beams using finite element modeling techniques and advanced strengthening materials.
The study, entitled “Finite Element-based Optimization of Shear-Strengthening Strategies for I-Shaped RC Beams using Hybrid Materials and Plate Reinforcement,” aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of several strengthening methods, including high-strength concrete, steel fiber-reinforced concrete, and externally bonded steel plates with different configurations. The study analyzed the beams' structural behavior using ANSYS to simulate shear resistance and deformation.
The study revealed that using inclined steel plates or full-length steel plates increased shear strength by up to 22% compared with the reference beams. Meanwhile, steel fiber-reinforced concrete achieved an improvement of approximately 17.5%, offering additional benefits in limiting crack propagation and improving post-peak structural behavior. The numerical models also demonstrated excellent agreement with experimental results, with the difference in ultimate shear strength not exceeding 2%.
The significance of this study lies in its practical and scientific contributions to identifying more effective methods for strengthening existing reinforced concrete structures, improving their structural performance, and promoting the application of numerical analysis techniques and advanced materials in addressing engineering challenges.
These research efforts reflect Al-Mustaqbal University's commitment to advancing scientific research and engineering knowledge, fostering innovation, and strengthening the university's role in producing research with scientific and practical value in the field of civil engineering.
