As part of its commitment to enhancing students’ practical skills and bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and hands-on field training, the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a specialized workshop entitled “Patient Monitor: Principles, Operation, and Maintenance.”
Workshop Details and Organizing Department
The workshop was delivered and directly supervised by Assistant Lecturer [Lecturer’s Name].
The workshop aimed to equip students with the technical and engineering skills required to operate, inspect, and maintain vital signs monitoring devices, which are essential components of Intensive Care Units (ICUs), operating rooms, and emergency departments in hospitals.
Workshop Topics and Practical Training
The workshop included theoretical sessions and intensive practical applications, covering the following topics:
* Explaining the operating principles and main components of the patient monitor, with an overview of the key vital signs it continuously measures, including:
* Electrocardiography (ECG).
* Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO₂).
* Non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP).
* Respiratory rate and body temperature.
* Training students to correctly connect medical probes and sensors to patients to ensure accurate signal acquisition, as well as configuring medical alarm limits to respond effectively to critical conditions.
* Reviewing common device malfunctions and diagnostic methods, while training students in preventive maintenance procedures and periodic calibration to minimize operational errors.
* Conducting a hands-on practical session in which students operated the device, interpreted vital sign readings, and analyzed the data displayed on the monitor screen.
The workshop emphasized that biomedical engineers’ competence in operating and maintaining these systems directly contributes to patient safety and supports the accuracy of clinical decisions made by healthcare professionals.
Activity Objectives in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This workshop directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly:
* SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being — By improving the efficiency and accuracy of biomedical monitoring systems to enhance patient safety and support the stability of their health conditions.
* SDG 4: Quality Education — By providing hands-on, practical training that strengthens biomedical engineering students’ technical competencies and professional skills.
