As part of its commitment to supporting student-led scientific initiatives and enhancing practical and applied skills, students from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a specialized workshop entitled “Lung Function and Its Measurement in Medical Practice.” Workshop Supervision The scientific workshop was directly supervised by Assistant Lecturer Zainab Sattar Jabbar. The event aimed to develop students’ scientific research, academic presentation, and teamwork skills, while linking theoretical concepts of medical physiology with the engineering and technological applications used in diagnosing respiratory diseases. Topics and Practical Applications During the workshop, students presented a comprehensive theoretical and practical study of respiratory system dynamics. The workshop covered the following topics: * Introducing the anatomical structure of the respiratory system, the mechanism of breathing, and gas exchange within the alveoli. * Explaining the fundamental physiological parameters used to assess lung function, including: * Vital Capacity (VC). * Forced Vital Capacity (FVC). * Forced Expiratory Volume in One Second (FEV1). * Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF). * Explaining the operating principles of the spirometer, the correct procedures for conducting pulmonary function tests, and methods of reading, analyzing, and interpreting test results and graphical curves. * Highlighting the importance of these measurements in the diagnosis and clinical follow-up of common respiratory diseases, such as bronchial asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). * Conducting a practical demonstration using a spirometer, during which participants received hands-on training in performing measurements and ensuring their accuracy through proper calibration procedures. The workshop witnessed considerable engagement from attendees, who praised the high scientific standard demonstrated by the organizing students and emphasized the importance of integrating biomedical engineering with direct clinical applications. Activity Objectives in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) This workshop directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly: * SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: By promoting understanding of the early diagnosis of respiratory diseases and improving the accuracy of preventive medical measurements. * SDG 4 – Quality Education: By providing students with opportunities to lead educational activities and enhance their research and practical competencies in accordance with modern educational approaches.
