As part of the College of Engineering’s commitment to enhancing students’ practical skills and connecting academic knowledge with modern medical technologies, the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Al-Mustaqbal University organized a workshop entitled “Patient Monitor: Operating Principles, Operation, and Maintenance,” presented by Assist. Lecturer Zainab Sattar Jabbar. The workshop aimed to develop students’ technical competencies in operating, maintaining, and handling medical devices according to established engineering principles.
The workshop highlighted the importance of patient monitoring devices in intensive care units, operating rooms, and emergency departments, emphasizing their essential role in continuously monitoring patients’ vital signs. It also explained the device’s operating principles, main components, and measured physiological parameters, including electrocardiography (ECG), blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂), non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP), respiratory rate, and body temperature.
Furthermore, the workshop addressed proper sensor placement and connection, alarm limit configuration, common technical faults, troubleshooting procedures, preventive maintenance, and periodic calibration in accordance with device requirements and manufacturer guidelines.
The workshop also included a practical training session during which students practiced operating the patient monitor, interpreting its readings, and using its essential functions. This hands-on experience contributed to strengthening their technical skills and understanding the importance of reliable medical equipment and accurate measurements in supporting patient safety and clinical decision-making.
This workshop reflects the Department of Biomedical Engineering’s ongoing efforts to promote practical education and prepare qualified engineering graduates capable of keeping pace with technological advancements in the healthcare sector. It also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education).
