As part of its efforts to strengthen practical learning and reinforce engineering concepts among students, the Civil Engineering Department at Al-Mustaqbal University organized an awareness activity entitled “Why Can Some Bridges Withstand Heavy Loads Without Collapsing?” on October 31, 2026. The activity was conducted as part of the Strength of Materials course under the supervision of Dr. Uday Al-Maamory and Dr. Mayada Waheed. The activity featured four scientific posters addressing fundamental engineering principles that contribute to structural safety, including load distribution, the effect of surface area on stress, the role of structural shape in resisting bending, and the importance of safety factors in engineering design. These concepts were illustrated through practical examples drawn from everyday life. The activity also attracted students from other university departments, who participated in face-to-face discussions and received simplified scientific explanations supported by a practical demonstration using paper and coins. This approach aimed to make theoretical concepts easier to understand and highlight how engineering principles are applied in real-life situations. The activity aimed to raise awareness of the importance of engineering design in ensuring bridge safety and load-bearing capacity, while highlighting the essential role of civil engineers in designing structures and achieving safety and sustainability requirements.
