Prepared by: Asst. Lecturer  Worwod Raoof Abd Al-Hussain Department of Civil Engineering – Al-Mustaqbal University Civil engineering has witnessed remarkable developments in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, particularly in foundation engineering, which is one of the most important fields associated with structural safety and stability. Foundation design primarily depends on understanding soil properties and bearing capacity, estimating expected settlement, and selecting the appropriate foundation type and dimensions. Artificial intelligence technologies have introduced modern approaches for analyzing geotechnical data and predicting soil behavior, thereby supporting more accurate engineering decisions and improving design efficiency. The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Soil Properties Analysis Laboratory and field test results, such as the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and the Cone Penetration Test (CPT), represent essential data for soil assessment and foundation design. Machine learning algorithms and artificial neural networks can be employed to analyze these data and establish relationships between soil properties and its behavior under different loading conditions. This approach helps predict soil bearing capacity and estimate expected settlement, in addition to identifying the factors that have the greatest influence on foundation performance. Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Foundation Design Artificial intelligence techniques can be used to predict soil bearing capacity, estimate total and differential settlement, and assist in selecting suitable foundation types, including isolated, strip, raft, and deep foundations. Optimization algorithms can also be utilized to determine more efficient foundation dimensions while satisfying safety and stability requirements and reducing material consumption and construction costs. Integration of Artificial Intelligence with Engineering Software The integration of artificial intelligence models with engineering analysis and simulation software, such as ANSYS and PLAXIS, has created new opportunities for studying soil-foundation behavior under different loading conditions. Numerical analysis results can be used to train intelligent models and evaluate their performance, as well as to investigate the effects of structural loads, soil properties, and groundwater conditions on foundation stability. This integration contributes to developing analytical and design methods and improving the ability to assess complex engineering problems. Challenges and Engineering Considerations Despite the capabilities offered by artificial intelligence, the accuracy of its results depends on the quality of the data used and how well these data represent actual geotechnical conditions. Therefore, intelligent models must be validated and compared with field test results and established engineering analyses. It is also important to emphasize that these technologies serve as supporting tools for engineers and cannot replace geotechnical investigations, engineering expertise, or the requirements of applicable design codes. Conclusions and Recommendations The application of artificial intelligence in foundation engineering represents an important step towards advancing engineering design. It provides valuable capabilities for analyzing soil data, predicting bearing capacity and settlement, and optimizing foundation selection and dimensions. This article recommends encouraging the use of machine learning techniques in geotechnical investigations and integrating them with laboratory and field test results and engineering simulation software. The accuracy of predicted results must be carefully verified before their adoption in design, contributing to the development of safer, more efficient, and sustainable structures. References Das, B.
