Archaeological sites are among the most important material witnesses to the history of peoples and civilizations, as they represent a fundamental source for understanding the political, social, and economic developments that societies have experienced throughout the ages. Their importance is not limited to their historical and scientific value; it also extends to strengthening national identity and promoting cultural tourism. Therefore, protecting these sites is not the responsibility of government institutions and specialized authorities alone, but rather a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of all members of society. Society plays an important role in reducing the risks facing archaeological sites, including urban encroachment, illegal excavation, vandalism, the trafficking of archaeological artifacts, as well as neglect and human activities that contribute to the deterioration of historical monuments. These risks can be reduced by raising cultural and archaeological awareness and informing citizens about the importance of heritage and the need to preserve it as an irreplaceable cultural legacy. Educational institutions, universities, and the media also contribute to establishing a culture of respect for archaeological sites and encouraging community participation in their protection. The importance of cooperation between local residents and the relevant archaeological authorities is demonstrated through reporting violations, participating in awareness-raising and volunteer campaigns, and complying with the instructions and laws governing the protection of cultural property. Furthermore, involving local communities in tourism and cultural activities related to archaeological sites strengthens their sense of responsibility toward these sites and achieves a balance between tourism benefits and preserving their historical authenticity. Protecting archaeological sites is a shared national and moral responsibility that requires the combined efforts of institutions and society to ensure the preservation and sustainability of cultural heritage and its transmission to future generations as an essential part of the nation's collective memory and cultural identity. #Al-Mustaqbal University – The first private university in Iraq
