As part of its strategic vision to internationalize higher education and strengthen academic and research collaboration with leading global institutions, Al-Mustaqbal University, the first-ranked university in Iraq, held a high-level academic meeting with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), USA, a Carnegie-designated R1 (Very High Research Activity) institution, to explore opportunities for developing joint postgraduate programs, particularly Master's degrees in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cybersecurity.
This initiative reflects Al-Mustaqbal University's commitment to enhancing the quality of higher education, adopting internationally recognized academic standards, and preparing highly qualified graduates capable of addressing the rapidly evolving demands of digital technologies, innovation, and the global knowledge economy.
The meeting was led by Professor Hassan Shaker Majdy, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and attended by Professor Mudhafar Al-Zuhairi, Director of Academic and Scientific Supervision; Professor Azhar M. Abd, Dean of the College of Engineering and Technologies; directors of the International Relations Office, Scholarships and Cultural Relations Office, and Scientific Affairs Department; together with several faculty members.
The VCU delegation was headed by Dr. Asim Eskandarian, Dean of the College of Engineering, accompanied by the Director of Graduate Studies and several academic representatives. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Iraqi Cultural Attaché in Washington, D.C., and the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
During the meeting, participants reviewed the academic and research capabilities of VCU's College of Engineering, particularly its internationally recognized expertise in robotics, autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. Discussions focused on the academic framework for establishing the proposed joint Master's programs, including curriculum development, academic governance, supervision mechanisms, and quality assurance procedures in accordance with internationally recognized standards.
Professor Hassan Shaker Majdy emphasized that Al-Mustaqbal University is pursuing a comprehensive strategy to expand its international academic presence through sustainable partnerships with world-class universities. He noted that such collaborations contribute to advancing educational quality, strengthening scientific research, and supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within higher education.
He further stated that the University is committed to introducing internationally benchmarked postgraduate programs in emerging disciplines, particularly Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity, based on modern curricula and rigorous academic standards. These programs are intended to provide students with an advanced educational and research environment that equips them with the knowledge, technical competencies, and professional skills required for the digital economy and the global labor market.
Both institutions also discussed opportunities to expand collaborative research in robotics, intelligent systems, and cybersecurity through joint research projects, co-authored publications in high-impact international journals, faculty and researcher exchange programs, research fellowships, and the joint supervision of postgraduate students, thereby strengthening scientific cooperation between the two universities.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to continue technical and academic discussions to finalize the implementation framework and draft the formal cooperation agreements. These efforts will pave the way for obtaining the necessary approvals from the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and launching the joint Master's programs at the earliest opportunity, reaffirming Al-Mustaqbal University's commitment to advancing higher education in accordance with international best practices and global academic standards.
