The University of Al-Mustaqbal, represented by its Department of Administrative Affairs and Sustainable Development Division, participated in the national campaign to clean the Euphrates River of water hyacinth, launched under the patronage of the First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, with the participation of the Minister of Environment, the Minister of Water Resources, the Governor of Babylon, as well as several government institutions, civil society organizations, and volunteers. The participation came in implementation of the directives of the University President, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and in line with the University’s mission to serve the community and promote the principles of sustainable development. Eng. Khalid Kadhim Al-Salihi, Director of the Sustainable Development Division at the University, stated that the participation of the University’s Sustainability Ambassadors in this national campaign reflects the institution’s commitment to transforming knowledge into meaningful community action. He explained that water hyacinth has become a serious environmental and water management challenge due to its obstruction of water flow in the Euphrates River and irrigation canals, in addition to its negative impact on the efficiency of drinking water treatment plants and its excessive consumption of water resources at a time when Iraq is facing growing water scarcity driven by climate change. He further emphasized that protecting water resources is no longer the responsibility of government institutions alone, but a shared national duty requiring the collective efforts of universities and all sectors of society. He noted that the University firmly believes environmental awareness and volunteerism are essential pillars for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The campaign witnessed active participation from the University’s students and Sustainability Ambassadors, who contributed to removing the invasive plant while delivering awareness messages on the importance of protecting rivers.
