The College of Science at the University of Basrah held a public defense of a Master’s thesis on Sunday, August 9, 2026, in the Postgraduate Studies Hall. The thesis was presented by postgraduate student Zainab Salah Sami and was entitled: “A Study on the Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on Acanthamoeba spp. In Vitro and In Vivo.” The defense committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Khudair Abees Al-Hamiri, Head of the Department of Anesthesia Techniques at the College of Health and Medical Technologies, Al-Mustaqbal University. The committee included Prof. Dr. Athraa Abdul-Amir Aziz from the College of Science, University of Basrah, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Sundus Jumaa Fakher from the College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Basrah. The thesis was supervised by Assist. Prof. Dr. Shaimaa Abdulrazzaq Hamid and Assist. Prof. Dr. Intisar Jameel Hamad, both from the College of Science, University of Basrah. The study focused on the green synthesis of nanoparticles and their effects on Acanthamoeba spp., with the aim of exploring potential therapeutic applications against infections caused by this parasite, particularly Acanthamoeba keratitis and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis. The research involved the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using plant extracts and investigating their effects on Acanthamoeba spp. both in vitro and in vivo. Different concentrations of silver nanoparticles and varying exposure periods were examined, along with their therapeutic effects on the eye and skin tissues of infected mice. The findings demonstrated the effectiveness of silver nanoparticles in eliminating both the trophozoite and cystic stages of Acanthamoeba spp., highlighting their potential for future therapeutic applications in treating infections associated with this parasite. The participation of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Khudair Abees Al-Hamiri as chair of the defense committee reflects the active academic and research presence of the Department of Anesthesia Techniques in scientific forums and contributes to strengthening academic and research collaboration between Al-Mustaqbal University and Iraqi universities.
