Al-Mustaqbal University Participates in the 12th International Workshop of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities in Germany

Al-Mustaqbal University participated with an official delegation in the 12th International Workshop of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, part of Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from 24 to 26 August 2026. The workshop brought together university leaders, academics, experts, and specialists in sustainability from universities and international institutions. The Al-Mustaqbal University delegation included Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, President of the University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shaker Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering. The participation was part of the university’s efforts to strengthen its international academic presence and exchange expertise and experiences in university sustainability, green infrastructure, resource management, energy, water and waste management, sustainable transportation, as well as education and research related to sustainable development. Hosting the workshop at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld is particularly significant given its position as an advanced model of university sustainability. According to the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the campus ranked first in Germany and fourth globally, and has maintained the top position among German universities in the ranking since 2017. On the sidelines of the workshop, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation met with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Ph.D., Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, to discuss ways of strengthening academic communication and cooperation and exchanging expertise in sustainability within higher education institutions. The delegation also presented Al-Mustaqbal University’s experience and initiatives aimed at developing a sustainable university campus. During the meeting, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield to the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric in recognition of the organization’s efforts to support sustainability practices and promote their adoption in higher education institutions at the international level. The delegation also presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield to Professor Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, in recognition of the university’s role in supporting sustainability and developing an advanced university model in this field. The delegation further honored Professor Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, in appreciation of his efforts in organizing and hosting the workshop and his contributions to supporting international academic cooperation in the fields of environment and sustainability. Al-Mustaqbal University’s participation in the workshop is part of its efforts to strengthen international academic partnerships, exchange expertise with leading universities and institutions in sustainability, and enhance its performance in global sustainability indicators. It also reflects the university’s commitment to presenting its initiatives and experiences in sustainable development and extending their impact beyond the university campus to the wider community. Through this participation, the university reaffirms its commitment to developing a more sustainable university model and strengthening the role of education, scientific research, and international partnerships in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thereby enhancing its presence among international initiatives and programs concerned with the sustainability of higher education institutions.
