AL-MUSTAQBAL University Strengthens Its International Presence at UI GreenMetric Sustainability Workshop in Germany

AL-MUSTAQBAL University strengthened its international academic presence in the field of sustainability through its official participation in the 12th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, part of Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from 24–26 August 2026. The workshop brought together university leaders, academics, experts, and sustainability specialists from universities and institutions around the world. The university delegation was headed by Professor Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of AL-MUSTAQBAL University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shakir Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering. Their participation reflects the university’s commitment to expanding its international academic engagement and exchanging expertise and best practices in sustainable campuses, green infrastructure, resource management, energy, water and waste management, sustainable transportation, education, and sustainability-oriented research. The hosting of the workshop by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld was particularly significant, given its outstanding international standing as a leading model of university sustainability. In the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the campus ranked first in Germany and fourth globally, while maintaining its position as the leading German university in the ranking since 2017. During the workshop, the AL-MUSTAQBAL University delegation met with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, S.E., M.I.A., Ph.D., Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, to discuss opportunities for strengthening academic communication, cooperation, and the exchange of expertise in sustainability. The delegation also presented the university’s experience and initiatives in developing a sustainable campus. During the meeting, the delegation presented the AL-MUSTAQBAL University Shield to the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric in recognition of the organization’s efforts to promote and advance sustainability practices in higher education worldwide. The university delegation also presented the AL-MUSTAQBAL University Shield to Professor Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, in appreciation of the university’s distinguished role in supporting sustainability and developing an advanced university model with a strong global standing in this field. In addition, the delegation presented an honorary recognition to Professor Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, in appreciation of his efforts in organizing and hosting the workshop and his contribution to strengthening international academic cooperation in the fields of environment and sustainability. Through this participation, AL-MUSTAQBAL University reaffirms its commitment to strengthening international partnerships, advancing its performance in global sustainability rankings, and benefiting from leading international experiences. It also highlights the university’s sustainability initiatives and practices and its efforts to extend their impact beyond the campus to the wider community, contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reinforcing the university’s role as an active academic partner in building a more sustainable future.
