Al-Mustaqbal University presented specialized scientific research on the impact of visual pollution resulting from waste sites on the mental and psychological performance of school students, as part of its participation in the activities of the 12th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026), hosted by the Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, affiliated with Trier University of Applied Sciences, in Germany. Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Shakir Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering at Al-Mustaqbal University, presented the research entitled: “The Impacts of Visual Pollution from Waste Sites on the Mental and Psychological Performance of School Students” The research examined the effects of visual pollution resulting from waste sites on the mental and psychological performance of school students, highlighting an environmental issue whose impacts extend beyond aesthetic concerns to affect the educational environment, students’ psychological well-being, and their daily behaviors. The study focused on visual pollution caused by waste accumulation and indiscriminate dumping in areas surrounding schools, and its potential effects on students’ concentration, organization of thoughts, anxiety, psychological discomfort, behavior, and environmental awareness. The study also reported the findings of a field survey involving 400 secondary school students in Babil Governorate, using a scientific 15-item scale designed to assess the effects of the surrounding environment on students’ mental, psychological, and behavioral aspects. The presentation also included a collection of authentic field photographs from the study sites in Babil Governorate, along with the key findings, which indicated noticeable levels of difficulty in concentration, psychological discomfort, and anxiety among students exposed to visually polluted environments, in addition to potential effects on certain behaviors and practices related to environmental awareness. The research attracted the attention and engagement of workshop participants due to its approach linking environmental sustainability, the quality of the educational environment, and students’ psychological well-being. It emphasized that addressing visual pollution should not be viewed merely as an aesthetic or urban issue, but rather as a multidimensional challenge affecting educational, psychological, environmental, and societal aspects. This participation reflects Al-Mustaqbal University’s commitment to expanding its scientific presence in international forums and utilizing scientific research to address real-world environmental and societal challenges. It also reinforces the University’s role in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting a culture of sustainability, further establishing the concept of the sustainable university as an active partner in improving environmental and community well-being. Al-Mustaqbal University’s participation in IWGM 2026 further highlights the importance of directing academic research toward sustainability issues that have a direct impact on people’s lives, particularly younger generations, while strengthening the integration of scientific research, education, the environment, psychological well-being, and sustainable development.
