Al-Mustaqbal University Strengthens Its International Presence through Participation in the 12th International Workshop of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities in Germany.

As part of its commitment to strengthening its academic and scientific presence internationally, Al-Mustaqbal University participated with an official delegation in the 12th International Workshop of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026). The workshop was hosted by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, affiliated with Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany, from August 24–26, 2026, with the participation of university leaders, academics, experts, and sustainability specialists from universities and international institutions. The Al-Mustaqbal University delegation consisted of Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of Al-Mustaqbal University, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Ali Shakir Majdi, Dean of the College of Engineering. The participation aimed to strengthen the exchange of international expertise and experiences in the fields of university sustainability, green infrastructure, resource management, energy, water, waste, sustainable transportation, as well as education and research related to sustainability. The hosting of the workshop by Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld was particularly significant, given its position as a leading international model for implementing university sustainability practices. In the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the campus ranked first in Germany and fourth globally, maintaining its position as the top-ranked German university in the ranking since 2017. During the event, the Al-Mustaqbal University delegation met with Dr. Vishnu Juwono, Chairperson of UI GreenMetric, where discussions focused on strengthening communication and cooperation and exchanging expertise in sustainability within higher education institutions. The delegation also presented the university’s experience and initiatives in developing a sustainable campus. In recognition of UI GreenMetric’s efforts to support and promote sustainability practices at universities worldwide, the delegation presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield to the Chairperson of UI GreenMetric. As part of efforts to expand academic cooperation, the delegation also presented the Al-Mustaqbal University Shield to Prof. Dr. Dorit Schumann, President of Trier University of Applied Sciences, in appreciation of the university’s distinguished role in supporting sustainability and developing an advanced university model with a strong global standing in this field. The delegation also honored Prof. Dr. Klaus Helling, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Business and Law at Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, in recognition of his efforts in organizing and hosting the workshop and supporting international academic cooperation in the fields of environment and sustainability. Al-Mustaqbal University’s participation in this international event reflects its vision of strengthening international partnerships, improving its performance in global sustainability indicators, and benefiting from leading international experiences. It also highlights the university’s initiatives in sustainable development and its efforts to extend their impact beyond the university campus to the wider community, further reinforcing its role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and building effective international academic partnerships. Al-Mustaqbal University is the first one university in Iraq.
