Physical therapy is one of the evolving fields of medical science that has undergone significant expansion in its areas of practice and specialization. It is no longer limited to treating movement-related injuries or rehabilitating patients after fractures and surgical procedures. Instead, it has become an essential component of modern healthcare, contributing to the prevention of physical and movement-related problems, restoration of bodily functions, improvement of daily activities, and enhancement of patients’ quality of life. With advances in medical science and a growing understanding of diseases and functional disorders, a wide range of core and specialized areas have emerged within physical therapy, each employing assessment and rehabilitation approaches suited to the nature of the condition and the individual needs of the patient.
Among the advanced subspecialties is Vestibular Rehabilitation, which focuses on assessing and treating disorders associated with the balance system of the inner ear. It relies on neurological and movement-based exercise programs designed to improve visual-motor coordination and address conditions such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular dysfunction, and certain balance and movement disorders. Another important field is Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation, which focuses on assessing and treating functional disorders of the pelvic floor muscles, including urinary incontinence, chronic pelvic pain, and pelvic organ prolapse, as well as specialized rehabilitation programs for women during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Oncology Physical Therapy is another specialized field concerned with managing the physical effects associated with cancer treatments, including surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. This may include addressing lymphedema following lymph node removal, as well as helping patients manage weakness and fatigue associated with the condition and its treatment. Chronic Pain Management, meanwhile, incorporates modern concepts in neuroscience to understand and address persistent pain through movement-based and educational programs designed to improve the nervous system’s response to pain and help patients regain functional abilities. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Rehabilitation focuses on assessing and treating disorders affecting the jaw joint and the muscles involved in jaw movement, with interventions aimed at reducing pain, managing joint sounds, and relieving muscle tension in the jaw and neck that may be associated with certain headaches and facial pain conditions.
Alongside these specialized areas, core clinical specialties form the broader foundation of physical therapy practice across various healthcare settings. Orthopedic Physical Therapy is one of the most prominent fields, focusing
