Department of Forensic Evidence Organizes a Scientific Workshop on “Chirality in Sugars: The Relationship Between Stereochemistry, Optical Activity, and Biological Significance” The Department of Forensic Evidence at the College of Science, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a scientific workshop entitled “Chirality in Sugars: The Relationship Between Stereochemistry, Optical Activity, and Biological Significance,” delivered by Lecturer Dr. Karrar Majeed Obaid. The workshop explored chirality in sugars and the relationship between the spatial arrangement of atoms and optical activity. It also clarified the distinction between the D and L configurations and the direction of rotation of plane-polarized light, emphasizing that these configurations alone do not indicate the direction of rotation. The workshop highlighted how stereochemistry influences the interaction of sugars with enzymes and their roles in biological processes. These concepts were also linked to the chemical analysis of samples relevant to forensic evidence. This workshop reflects the department’s commitment to strengthening students’ scientific knowledge and connecting chemical principles with applications in forensic science.
