As part of its ongoing scientific and educational activities aimed at enriching students’ specialized knowledge and linking physiological principles with engineering measurements, the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a specialized scientific seminar entitled “Lung Capacity: Physiological Concepts and Mechanisms for Measuring Respiratory Air Volumes.”
Seminar Organizers and Supervisors
The seminar was conducted and directly supervised by:
* Asst. Lecturer Hiba Diyaa Abdul Amir
* Engineer Mohammed Abdul Karim Razouqi
The seminar aimed to enhance students’ theoretical understanding of the physiological principles of respiration and highlight the biomedical measurements and techniques used to assess respiratory function, supporting the design and development of medical devices for respiratory measurement and rehabilitation.
Scientific Topics and Content
The seminar covered several specialized scientific topics, including:
* Introducing the comprehensive scientific concept of lung capacity and examining the different respiratory air volumes during rest and physical exertion.
* Explaining the various types of lung capacities, including Vital Capacity (VC) and Total Lung Capacity (TLC), while clarifying the mathematical and physiological relationships between them.
* Exploring the relationship between lung volumes and respiratory function indicators, and demonstrating how these indicators can be applied in medical diagnosis and the design of biomedical monitoring systems.
The seminar attracted considerable interest from faculty members and students and featured in-depth scientific discussions on modern technologies and devices used to measure lung function, particularly spirometry devices.
Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals
This scientific activity directly supports the university’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:
* SDG 4 – Quality Education: By providing high-quality specialized scientific content that enhances educational standards and strengthens students’ analytical skills.
* SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: By applying physiological concepts and biomedical measurements to engineering innovation and the development of medical technologies and devices.
