As part of its efforts to support practical education and enhance students’ hands-on and analytical skills, the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a specialized workshop entitled “Quantitative Analysis of Lung Capacity: Computational Applications of Respiratory Air Volumes.” Workshop Organizers and Supervisors The workshop was conducted and directly supervised by: * Asst. Lecturer Hiba Diyaa Abdul Amir * Engineer Mohammed Abdul Karim Razouqi The workshop aimed to train students to move from theoretical understanding to the mathematical and computational application of respiratory dynamics. It also sought to strengthen the analytical skills required to process physiological data and interpret measurements obtained from pulmonary function testing devices. Practical Topics and Skills The workshop featured intensive practical and computational exercises covering several key topics, including: * Distinguishing between fundamental respiratory air volumes, such as Tidal Volume (TV) and Residual Volume (RV), and the lung capacities derived from them. * Applying the mathematical relationships and equations used to calculate and determine lung capacities with a high degree of accuracy. * Analyzing educational examples and graphical representations of respiratory function measurements, including reading and interpreting physiological values according to scientific principles and recognized medical standards. * Strengthening the integration of theoretical knowledge with biomedical engineering applications to support the design and calibration of mechanical ventilators and medical diagnostic equipment. The workshop witnessed strong engagement and considerable interest from participants, who performed computational and analytical exercises and reviewed their results under the supervision of the instructors. Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals This workshop directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly: * SDG 4 – Quality Education: By developing students’ knowledge and practical skills and enabling them to perform mathematical and quantitative analyses of medical concepts. * SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: By applying scientific techniques and precise measurements to promote innovation and advance the development of healthcare devices and equipment.
