Prof. Dr. Aqeel Handil Tarish, Head of the Community Health Technologies Department at Al-Mustaqbal University, has presented a comprehensive scientific article on chickenpox, scientifically known as varicella. The article highlights the viral etiology, modes of transmission, major clinical manifestations, potential complications, and approaches to treatment and prevention. The article explains that chickenpox is caused by the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV), a member of the Herpesviridae family. The virus is transmitted through respiratory droplets and direct contact with the fluid contained in skin vesicles. It also discusses the incubation period and the associated symptoms, including fever, fatigue, headache, loss of appetite, and an itchy skin rash. The article further addresses potential complications, particularly among adults, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals. It emphasizes the importance of appropriate medical management and warns against administering aspirin to children and adolescents with chickenpox because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome. In addition, the article outlines the fundamental principles of disease management, including relief of itching and fever, proper skin care, and the use of antiviral therapy when indicated under medical supervision. It also highlights the importance of vaccination and isolation in reducing transmission. Furthermore, it explains that latent VZV may reactivate years after the initial infection, leading to herpes zoster (shingles). This scientific article contributes to raising health awareness and disseminating reliable scientific information about viral diseases and their prevention, thereby supporting health literacy within the community.
