Presented by: Prof. Dr. Mayada Waheed Falah (Assistant Professor) Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University Reinforced concrete beams are fundamental elements in structures, as they contribute to transferring loads from slabs to columns and supports. With the evolving requirements of modern construction, openings in the beam web (Web Openings) have become necessary for passing air-conditioning and ventilation ducts and electrical and mechanical services. Despite their functional importance, these openings may affect the efficiency of the structural element and alter the paths along which internal forces are transferred. Scientific Content The structural behavior of beams with openings differs from that of solid beams, due to stress concentration around the edges of the openings, particularly at the inner corners of rectangular openings. The dimensions, shape, and location of an opening directly affect shear capacity and bending moment, and may also lead to reduced structural stiffness and increased cracking and deformations. Large openings are more structurally complex, as they may give rise to the Vierendeel mechanism, which causes local moments and shear forces in the upper and lower chords surrounding the opening. To improve structural performance, additional reinforcement around the openings can be adopted, along with modern strengthening techniques such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites, in addition to numerical analysis using finite element software. Scientific studies have confirmed the importance of considering the location, dimensions, and reinforcement details of the opening from the early stages of structural design. Conclusion Designing reinforced concrete beams with openings requires a precise understanding of the effect of geometric changes on the paths of force transfer and on the resistance of structural elements. Early planning of openings, providing appropriate reinforcement, and making use of modern strengthening techniques are among the most important factors that contribute to achieving structural safety, efficiency, and the sustainability of structures.
