As part of its efforts to enhance practical skills and hands-on training for students of the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Mustaqbal University, the department organised a specialised workshop entitled “Ultrasound: Principles, Components, and Operation”, held at the Medical Devices and Equipment Laboratory. About the Workshop and Organising Team The workshop was presented and directly supervised by: * Assistant Lecturer Zainab Sattar Jabbar The workshop aimed to familiarise students with the importance of ultrasound devices in modern medical diagnosis, as a safe, non-invasive imaging technique widely used across various medical sectors and hospitals. Scientific and Practical Topics The workshop provided a comprehensive overview of the ultrasound imaging system, covering the following topics: * Physical and Engineering Principles: Explaining how high-frequency sound waves are generated using piezoelectric transducers, how they are reflected by body tissues, and how these echoes are converted into real-time diagnostic images. * Components and Internal Structure: Examining the main components of ultrasound equipment, including probes, signal processors, control boards, and display screens. * Operating and Calibration Procedures: Providing hands-on training on operating the device, adjusting its settings and operating parameters, and ensuring the safety and reliability of biomedical signals. * Medical and Clinical Applications: Highlighting specialised applications in obstetrics and gynaecology, internal medicine, cardiac examinations (Echocardiography), and other biomedical fields. The workshop witnessed significant interaction and practical training among participating students, who praised the value of laboratory-based experience in connecting theoretical knowledge with actual medical equipment. Activity Objectives in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) This workshop directly aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the university, particularly: * SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: By supporting safe and non-invasive diagnostic technologies to improve healthcare quality. * SDG 4 – Quality Education: By providing a laboratory-based learning environment and practical training that enhance students’ engineering and technical skills. * SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: By keeping pace with technological advancements and improving proficiency in the use of modern medical systems and equipment.
