A Scientific Field Visit for Power Mechanics Engineering Technology Students to Al-Bilal Solar Energy Company in Karbala

Under the patronage of the esteemed University President, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Engineering Technologies, Dr. Azhar Mohsen Abd, the Department of Power Mechanics Engineering Technologies – Renewable Energy Branch, in coordination with the Energy Research Center, organized a scientific field visit for third-stage students to Al-Bilal Solar Energy Company in the holy province of Karbala. The visit aimed to provide students with direct field experience in the clean-energy sector and to enhance their practical skills through hands-on exposure to modern solar-energy systems, in alignment with the seventh Sustainable Development Goal (Affordable and Clean Energy). Faculty members accompanied the students on a tour arranged by the company across its work sites, where specialists delivered comprehensive explanations about the stages of designing large-scale solar projects, their operation mechanisms, and their integration into the national grid, in addition to the techniques used to calculate production capacity and manage energy. Al-Bilal Solar Energy Company is considered one of the leading companies in Iraq in this field and is part of Al Bilal Group, which specializes in infrastructure and energy projects. The company oversees a solar project regarded as one of the largest investment projects in the country, with a total designed capacity of 525 MW carried out in two phases (300 MW in Karbala and 225 MW in Babel). The first phase alone includes more than 39,000 solar panels distributed over an area exceeding 4,000 dunams. The project aims to: • Supply the national grid with stable electrical power. • Reduce dependence on fossil fuels during peak demand. • Lower carbon emissions and improve environmental quality. • Support Iraq’s progress toward optimal investment in sustainable energy sources. This project is the first large-scale solar plant to directly supply the national grid and has obtained official approval from the National Investment Commission, with an adopted energy purchase tariff of 3.95 cents per kilowatt-hour. This visit comes as part of the department’s efforts to bridge theoretical study with practical application and to prepare students to become active contributors to clean-energy projects by enabling them to engage directly with the technical and engineering expertise operating in this vital sector.
