Social media networks have brought about a distinct shift in the concepts of friendship and human relationships. Forming and maintaining connections is now possible via screens without the need for face-to-face meetings, opening up vast opportunities to connect with people from diverse cultures and societies. However, a large number of friends and followers in the virtual world does not necessarily equate to deep human connections; an individual may feel lonely despite having an extensive network of digital contacts. Digital isolation arises when excessive virtual interaction replaces real-world communication, diminishing opportunities for direct dialogue, emotional connection, and shared experiences—elements that foster trust and a sense of belonging. Furthermore, constant comparison with others' lives and the pursuit of "likes" and engagement can impact self-esteem and social satisfaction. Yet, social media cannot be deemed a direct cause of isolation in every instance; it also facilitates the maintenance of friendships and the provision of social support, particularly across geographical distances. Thus, the importance of mindful platform usage lies in striking a balance between digital and real-world relationships and prioritizing the quality of friendships over follower counts. True friendship is not measured by the volume of messages or likes, but by sincerity, trust, mutual care, and being present for one another when it matters most.
