The Department of Artificial Intelligence Sciences at the College of Science, Al-Mustaqbal University, held an awareness-raising scientific seminar entitled “When Images Lie: Deepfakes Between Creativity and Deception.” The seminar was delivered by Prof. Dr. Abdul-Kadhim Abdul-Kareem Al-Darai, Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence Sciences, on Monday, 26 October 2026, at the Student Activities Hall in the Medical Technical Building, in the presence of several faculty members, staff, and students. The seminar was held under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Asst. Prof. Dr. Furat Hamza Al-Sultani. It aimed to raise awareness of the risks associated with artificially generated content using artificial intelligence technologies and to introduce participants to methods of detecting such content and protecting themselves against its potential dangers amid the rapid development of digital manipulation technologies. The seminar addressed the concept of deepfakes and their main forms, including face swapping, lip-sync manipulation, voice cloning, and the complete artificial generation of images and video clips. It also featured practical demonstrations of still-image animation, face swapping in videos, and comparisons between genuine and cloned voices. The event further included a live demonstration of real-time face swapping using a computer camera and an educational program developed by the Department of Artificial Intelligence Sciences to explain how these technologies work in practice. The seminar examined the major risks associated with deepfakes, including financial fraud, cyber extortion, and media disinformation. It also highlighted detection methods, including identifying signs of manipulation, verifying content sources, and using specialized technical tools and algorithms. Additionally, the seminar addressed safety guidelines and reporting mechanisms for cybercrime and misleading content, introducing participants to available reporting channels, including 911 for the Ministry of Interior, 131 for the National Security Service, and the “Ameen” platform. At the conclusion of the seminar, a discussion and question-and-answer session was held. The event witnessed notable engagement from attendees, who praised the importance of the topic, the presentation style, and the live practical demonstrations that helped clarify the risks of deepfakes and ways to counter them. This seminar forms part of Al-Mustaqbal University’s ongoing efforts to promote digital awareness and encourage the responsible use of artificial intelligence technologies, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
