Al-Mustaqbal University examined the impact of visual pollution resulting from waste sites, waste accumulation, and indiscriminate dumping on the mental, psychological, and behavioral performance of school students during its participation in the 12th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric for Sustainable Universities (IWGM 2026). The workshop was held on August 30, 2026, at the Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld, affiliated with Trier University of Applied Sciences in Germany. The research, titled “The Impacts of Visual Pollution from Waste Sites on the Mental and Psychological Performance of School Students,” was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Shakir Majid, Dean of the College of Engineering at Al-Mustaqbal University. The study examined the potential effects of visual pollution caused by waste accumulation and indiscriminate dumping in areas surrounding schools, and its implications for the educational environment, students’ psychological well-being, and their daily behavior. The research was based on a field survey involving 400 secondary school students in Babylon Governorate, using a 15-item scientific scale designed to assess the mental, psychological, and behavioral impacts associated with the environment surrounding schools. The study focused on several indicators, including levels of concentration, the ability to organize thoughts, anxiety, psychological discomfort, as well as behavioral indicators and students’ environmental awareness. The presentation also included field photographs and examples from the study sites in Babylon Governorate, together with the main findings. The results indicated noticeable levels of difficulty in concentration, anxiety, and psychological discomfort among students in school environments affected by visual pollution, in addition to indicators related to behavior, practices, and environmental awareness. The research attracted the attention and engagement of workshop participants by presenting an approach that connects environmental sustainability, the quality of the educational environment, and students’ psychological well-being. It highlighted that visual pollution is not merely an aesthetic or urban issue, but may also have educational, psychological, environmental, and social dimensions that warrant further research and action. Al-Mustaqbal University’s participation reflects its commitment to strengthening its research presence at international scientific forums and directing academic research toward environmental and social challenges that have a direct impact on people’s lives. It also supports the promotion of sustainability and greater integration among scientific research, education, the environment, and psychological well-being. The study aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13: Climate Action.
