Al Mustaqbal University hosted the third meeting of the team responsible for preparing the locally determined Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) document, focusing on assessing climate risks in Babil Governorate and identifying the measures and projects required to mitigate their impacts and enhance climate adaptation. The meeting brought together representatives from government institutions, academic bodies, international organizations, and civil society organizations. The meeting was attended by Mr. Makki Hadi Al-Shammari, Director General of the Department of Environmental Protection and Improvement in the Middle Euphrates Region; Mr. Ghaith Al-Zuhairi, representative of the Ministry of Environment; Dr. Khadija Al-Jabri, representative of the Coordinator of the CRS International Organization in Iraq; along with members of the working team and representatives of the participating institutions. Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, President of Al Mustaqbal University, affirmed the University’s support for the team’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of establishing effective partnerships among government institutions, universities, international organizations, and civil society to advance toward practical, evidence-based measures that respond to the actual climate needs of the governorate. For his part, Prof. Dr. Muzaffar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision, presented an overview of the University’s sustainability and climate action initiatives. He highlighted several practices, including the use of clean energy, expanding green spaces and afforestation, waste management, promoting sustainable transportation and climate-smart agriculture, as well as the University’s efforts to support the Sustainable Development Goals. The meeting focused on identifying the climate-related needs and priorities of Babil Governorate and developing a framework for adaptation and mitigation projects, paving the way for securing funding and translating proposals into practical, implementable projects. Participants also discussed several challenges affecting the governorate’s future, including declining water resources, rising temperatures, drought and desertification, agricultural land degradation, dust storms, and the decline of vegetation cover, in addition to their economic, social, and health impacts.
