Al-Mustaqbal Energy Research Center Enhances Control Systems for Small-Scale Wind Energy Units

As part of its ongoing technical activities, the engineering team at Al-Mustaqbal Energy Research Center has successfully implemented a series of technical enhancements on a vertical-axis wind turbine prototype. The project focuses on optimizing the integration of DC-based loads and improving power management efficiency. Technical Implementation & System Architecture The development involved restructuring the electrical circuit to ensure a stable and controllable power flow. The system was configured as follows: • MPPT Integration: A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) charge controller was integrated to bridge the gap between the wind turbine and the storage battery. This ensures that the system extracts the maximum possible power even during fluctuating wind speeds. • Smart Load Management: A DC lamp was connected specifically to the MPPT’s load output. This configuration grants the team precise control over switching the light on and off while protecting the hardware from voltage spikes, thereby extending the lifespan of the components. • Real-time Performance Indicators: For immediate visual feedback, a LED light strip was wired directly to the turbine’s input stage. This acts as a real-time visual indicator, illuminating instantly as the turbine begins to rotate, providing a clear demonstration of energy generation before it enters the regulation phase. Research Objectives This technical update aims to study the behavior of small DC loads when powered by intermittent renewable sources. By refining these "Micro-grid" models, the Al-Mustaqbal Energy Research Center seeks to demonstrate practical, low-loss energy solutions for independent lighting systems without the need for complex AC conversion. This project underscores the center’s commitment to Research and Development (R&D), transforming standard hardware into optimized, controllable research models that serve the university's vision for a sustainable future.
